Stories of Food as Living Heritage: Indigenous Foods: Queensland’s Oldest Living Food Heritage
Long before cafés, vineyards or market gardens, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples sustained complex food systems across Queensland for tens of thousands of years.
Knowledge of native plants, seasonal harvesting, fishing, hunting and land management formed an essential part of cultural life and connection to Country. Foods such as bunya nuts, finger limes, native ginger, yams, macadamias, lemon myrtle and Davidson plum were harvested, traded and shared between communities for generations.
In South East Queensland, the bunya gatherings of the Bunya Mountains were among the largest known cultural gatherings in Australia, bringing communities together to harvest and celebrate the seasonal bunya nut crop. These gatherings combined food, ceremony, trade and social connection, demonstrating the deep cultural significance of food within Aboriginal life.

Today, Indigenous food knowledge continues to influence contemporary Australian cuisine. Native ingredients once largely overlooked are now found in cafés, bakeries, restaurants and supermarkets across Queensland.
This growing recognition reflects a broader acknowledgement of the world’s oldest continuing living cultures and the sophisticated environmental knowledge developed over thousands of years.
Many Indigenous chefs, growers, educators and businesses are now leading the revival and sharing of native food traditions, ensuring cultural knowledge continues to be passed between generations while creating new opportunities for communities.
The story of Indigenous foods reminds us that Queensland’s food heritage began long before European settlement. It remains a living, evolving tradition grounded in Country, sustainability, cultural knowledge and community connection.
