Domestic and family violence is a national emergency with a long and troubling history. In this lecture, Dr Andy Kaladelfos , Senior Lecturer in Criminology in the School of Law, Society and Criminology, University of New South Wales, and the Co-Convenor of the Gendered Violence Research Network., draws upon a longitudinal study to map the contours of interpersonal violence in Australian history and the criminal law’s responses. It examines how domestic and family violence was recognised and responded to across a 100-year period (1855–1954), how this compared to other forms of violence, and where historical lessons may reveal new pathways for prevention and response.
