William Robinson: Lessons in Looking offers a richer portrait of William Robinson’s life and legacy through the eyes of guest curator Anne Wallace—an acclaimed artist and Robinson’s former student. Drawing together a diverse selection of works, Wallace reflects on her formative years at art school under Robinson’s tutelage before he retired in 1989 to pursue artmaking full-time. For much of his career, Robinson’s artistic practice was inseparable from his teaching, both ideologically and practically, as teaching commitments and the demands of daily life shaped the rhythms of his artmaking. This exhibition explores how those intertwined roles, as artist, educator and mentor, informed a distinctive way of seeing that has left a lasting mark on Australian art.
